How Many Treats Can Your Dog Have a Day?

Treats are a must for training and for showing your dog some love, but too many take a toll on your dog's weight and the balance of its diet. Here's a simple guideline.

The 10% Rule

A common rule of thumb is that treats shouldn't make up more than about 10% of your dog's daily calorie intake. The rest should come from a nutritionally complete main food. On days with a lot of training, you can cut back the main meal slightly to compensate.

How to Make Treats Go Further

  • Use small pieces – your dog cares about how many, not how big.
  • Break larger treats into two or three pieces.
  • Use some of the regular food as rewards during calm training sessions.
  • Choose lean, single-protein treats for frequent training.

What About Chews?

Long-lasting chews count toward the total too, but they're given less often. Factor them in on the days your dog gets one.
