Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Undercoat deShedding Tool be used on all pets?

The Undercoat deShedding Tool can be used on most shedding animals, including dogs, cats, and other pets with an undercoat. It should not be used on non-shedding breeds or on animals with particularly sensitive skin. Use our breed lists to find out if a FURminator Undercoat deShedding Tool is right for your pet. Our dog breed list and cat breed list are designed to help you!

How often and for how long should I use the FURminator® Undercoat deShedding Tool?

For best results, use the FURminator® Undercoat deShedding Tool 1-2 times a week for 10 to 20 minutes per session. The actual time will vary depending on your pet's breed, coat condition, and coat thickness. During periods of heavy shedding, it may be necessary to use the Undercoat deShedding Tool more frequently. FURminator's grooming edge is designed to make grooming faster and easier, while the Skin Guard® design allows the tool to glide easily over the skin of most pets.

Where should I do the grooming?

The Undercoat deShedding Tool removes large amounts of loose hair and undercoat, so it's most practical to choose a location that's easy to clean – such as a tiled floor indoors or an outdoor area. The most important thing, however, is always to choose a place where your pet feels comfortable and safe.

How do I care for the Undercoat deShedding Tool?
  • Brush your pet before using the Undercoat deShedding Tool to remove any tangles and knots. Using the tool on matted fur can bend or break the teeth, and may also be uncomfortable for your pet.
  • Be careful not to drop or place the Undercoat deShedding Tool somewhere it might fall, as this could damage the teeth of the tool.
  • The deShedding edge can be cleaned with warm water and mild soap as needed. Cleaning can reduce the feeling of a dull edge by removing dander and debris that accumulates on the teeth. Dry the Undercoat deShedding Tool completely before storing it.
  • The FURminator® Undercoat deShedding Tool has an Edge Guard around the deShedding edge, so the tool does not need a protective cover when stored. Simply press down the FURejector® button and pull towards you to lock the Edge Guard in place, protecting the deShedding edge.
