Winter is tough on paw pads. Snow, ice, and especially road salt can leave paws dry, cracked, and sore. A little prevention makes a big difference.
Before the walk
Apply a thin layer of paw balm to the pads to protect against salt and drying out. Carefully trim the hair between the pads, where snow and ice build up into clumps.
After the walk
- Wipe the paws to remove road salt – salt stings in small cracks, and dogs tend to lick it off.
- Check between the pads for ice clumps and small cuts.
- Reapply paw balm if the pads are dry.
When should you take action?
Limping, excessive paw licking, or obvious sores should be checked out. Persistent cracks may need a vet's attention.
